Split the bill between friends

Split a restaurant bill evenly or by what each person ordered, with tip. For trips and shared houses, list who paid what and see who owes whom, in the fewest transfers.

Tip

Added on top of the bill. Use 0% if the total already includes it.

How to use it

Evenly: enter the bill total, set the number of people and pick a tip. To make paying easier, tick "round each share up".

By item: type the names of everyone at the table, add each item with its price and quantity, and mark who had it. By default an item is shared by everyone; tap names to keep only the people who shared that appetizer or drank that bottle of wine. The tip is calculated on what each person had, and a cover charge is added per person.

Trip or group expenses: record every expense, who paid it and who it should be split among. The tool works out everyone's balance and shows who pays whom, with the fewest transfers.

On every tab, "Copy summary" creates a text ready to paste into the group chat.

What it’s for

Splitting a bill sounds easy until someone says "I didn't drink" or "I only had the salad". This tool covers the three usual ways friends share costs:

  • Restaurant or bar, everyone pays the same: the quickest split, tip included.
  • Everyone pays for what they had: fair when some people drink and others don't, or when everyone ordered a different dish. Shared items (the nachos, the pizza, the wine) are divided only among the people who had them.
  • Trips, shared houses and parties: over a few days, each person pays for something different: gas, groceries, the rental, the tickets. At the end nobody knows who owes how much. Enter the expenses and the tool settles up.

The settlement is optimized: instead of everyone paying everyone, the list shows the shortest path. In a group of five people, at most four payments are enough for everyone to be even.

How it works

  • Tip: a percentage of what was ordered. On the by-item tab, each person tips on their own share, not on the whole bill. A cover charge is a fixed amount per person and is not tipped on.
  • Cents that don't divide: $100 among three people is $33.33 with one cent left over. The tool calculates in cents and hands the leftover cents out one per person, so the shares always add up to the exact total.
  • Balance: on the group tab, each person's balance is what they paid minus their share of the expenses. A positive balance gets money back; a negative one pays.
  • Who pays whom: the person who owes the most pays the person who is owed the most, and so on, until every balance is zero.

Everything runs in your browser. Names and amounts are saved only on this device, so you don't lose the bill if the page reloads, and nothing is sent to a server. "Start over" clears the current tab.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15 to 20% at a sit-down restaurant is customary, and 18% is common for large groups. Other countries differ: in much of Europe a service charge is often already included. If your total already includes service, choose 0%.

How do I split the bill when someone didn't drink?

Use the "By item" tab. Add the drinks as items and mark only the people who had them. Food that everyone shared stays on "Everyone".

How do I settle up after a trip with friends?

On the "Trip or group expenses" tab, add each expense with the person who paid it. If an expense wasn't for everyone (say, a tour only three people took), mark only those people. At the end, follow the "Who pays whom" list.

Why does one person pay one cent more?

Because some amounts don't divide evenly. Instead of losing the cent, it goes to one person so the shares add up to the bill.
