How to extract the audio from a video
- Click the yellow area and pick the video, or drag the file onto the page.
- If you only need part of it, drag the yellow handles on the bar to mark the section. You can also type the start and end (for example,
12:30). - Choose the format: MP3, M4A or WAV.
- Click Extract audio. The download starts on its own when it’s done, and you can play the result right on the page.
Which format to choose
| Format | Advantage | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Plays on every device and app | Listening on a phone or in the car, sharing, using in editors |
| M4A | Copies the video’s original sound without re-encoding | Keeping maximum quality, listening on iPhone, Mac and Android |
| WAV | No compression | Editing the audio later (Audacity, DAWs, transcription software) |
Almost every video from a phone, a camera or the internet stores its sound as AAC. In that case, M4A is made by copying the audio exactly as it is, with no conversion at all: it’s ready in a few seconds, even for hours-long videos, with exactly the same quality as the original. The page tells you when this happens.
What it’s for
- Recorded classes, talks and meetings: listen like a podcast on the bus or at the gym without draining the battery on the screen.
- Transcription: many speech-to-text services and apps only accept audio, and an MP3 is much smaller than the video.
- Music from your own video: pull the soundtrack from a video of a concert, a rehearsal or a school performance.
- Editing: separate the narration or ambient sound to use in another project.
- Voice messages: turn a video into audio to share again or keep.
To make a ringtone from the result, open the audio in the MP3 cutter.
Your video never leaves your device
Videos are usually large and personal. Sites that convert on a server need to receive the whole file, which is slow and exposes the content. Here, your own browser reads the video in pieces and saves only the sound: nothing is uploaded, there’s no size limit beyond your device’s memory, and once the page has loaded it even works offline.
Supported video formats
MP4, MOV (iPhone), M4V, WebM, MKV and MPEG-TS. The audio can be AAC, MP3, Opus, Vorbis, FLAC or PCM. Videos with AC-3 sound (common in some MKV movies) only open in browsers that can decode it.
Frequently asked questions
Does the audio lose quality?
With M4A, when the video’s sound is AAC, no: it’s copied unchanged. With MP3, the sound is encoded again; at 192 kbps the difference isn’t noticeable. WAV is lossless too, but the file gets big (about 10 MB per minute).
Can I extract audio from a YouTube or Instagram video?
The tool works with files that are on your device, such as videos you recorded or received. It doesn’t download videos from websites. Respect the copyright of whoever made the content.
Why does the browser say it can’t read the audio?
Some sound formats, such as AC-3 and DTS, aren’t supported by every browser. Try Chrome or Edge on a computer. If the video comes from an old camera (AVI, WMV), convert it to MP4 first.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On iPhone, the M4A is ready to play in the Files app. Very long videos may take longer on basic phones.
How long does it take?
A copied M4A takes seconds. MP3 and WAV process several minutes of audio per second on an ordinary computer, so a one-hour class is usually ready in under a minute.
